Music Rave: Notre-Dame de Paris

For you Francophones/-philes out there, you really ought to check out Richard Cocciante’s amazing rock opera, Notre-Dame de Paris, an updated version of Hugo’s Hunchback of Notre Dame. While there is an Italian version and an English concept album, both are far inferior to the original French.

Favorite songs:

  • Belle, in which Quasimodo, Frollo and Phoebus sing their love/lust/passion for Esmeralda
  • Déchiré, in which Phoebus sings of being torn between two women
  • Val d’Amour, in which the poet Gringoire introduces the fatal brothel
  • Le Temps des Cathédrales, Gringoire’s opening and closing number
  • Un Matin Tu Dansais, in which Frollo explains to the astonished Esmeralda why he is obsessed with her
  • and too many more to list

I’ve put the DVD on my Netflix queue–we’ll see if it lives up to my expectations. [Update: It did.]
