If I'm right, you are saying you do not understand your neighbor and your brother, but that you still love them. I have no problem with that as far as it goes; the question I am asking in my blog is, have you <i>tried</i>. If you said you loved these people without having "a <i>desire</i> to understand the other side," I would have to say that we have different ideas of what love is. My family does not understand me, and I must admit I don't understand them very well. But we are at least <i>trying</i> to find common ground. It is lack of the merest effort, the merest desire, to understand that offends me, not necessarily the lack of understanding itself.<br/><br/>As for loving and respecting oneself, that's a huge minefield, but I will say one thing: I only truly started to love myself when I decided to cut myself some slack and let me be me. Does this mean I really don't love and respect my brother who actively supports the war in Iraq, went there on Navy assignment, and vehemently argues that our armies should be over there?
