Soulforce: Equality Ride

When I first heard that Soulforce’s “Equality Ride” would be heading to my alma mater, Brigham Young University, I was both skeptical and apathetic. Not being religious myself, I don’t feel the urgency these Christian activists do about increasing the religious acceptance of gays, and looking at their track record (arrests at two universities; a cold reception at the others) I didn’t see that they were doing much good. (I care marginally more about letting gays and lesbians into the military, but can’t imagine ever attending a military college or enlisting.)

Well, it seems that the BYU administration has agreed to let the Equality Riders onto campus next week (as reported by Soulforce and by this Daily Universe article), although the boundaries that will be enforced on the visitors’ behavior seem fairly nebulous. I don’t know why, but suddenly I’m extremely interested in the outcome of this encounter. I had assumed that BYU police would summarily arrest any Riders who entered the campus, but if there’s a possibility of actual scheduled dialogue . . . I’ll definitely be following this a bit closer.

You can find more information about Soulforce’s visit to Provo and BYU here.
