Magic Made Me Do It
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell is seven hundred and eighty-two pages in the American hardback edition (Bloomsbury). It is extremely dense, with copious footnotes and interpolations, which would ordinarly make for slow going. I have discovered, however, that it is entirely possible to pick it up in the afternoon on one’s day off, and, without undue exertion, to be five hundred and sixty-five pages into it twenty-four hours later. How is that possible, you ask? MAGIC.
