Stardust, reprise

I went to see Stardust last night, and it was awesome. The theater was packed (good thing we bought our tickets beforehand) and the audience was appreciative. The story wasn’t exactly the same as the book–the ending was Hollywoodized and the extended sky-pirate sequence seemed superfluous–but it didn’t matter. Verdict: Stardust is funny, swashbuckling, romantic, magical . . . everything most movies aren’t nowadays. Too bad the marketing sucked miserably; I hope the film’s strengths can overcome that little obstacle.

Two notes: one, Ricky Gervais bugs. How can anyone stand him in anything? Urgh. Two, total cutie Henry Cavill was billed at the end, but I didn’t remember seeing him at all. Who did he play?? I couldn’t figure it out. According to IMDb, he was Tristan’s pompous rival Humphrey, but they’ve got to be pulling my leg. Just compare this slew of photos of Henry Cavill with this still from Stardust and decide for yourself if it’s the same person. Of course, any makeup team that can transform Michelle Pfeiffer into this monstrosity could conceivably turn Henry Cavill into a complete prat. The question is, why would you want to?
