Revisiting the Piercing
It’s been five months since I got my lip pierced, but it’s only been a few weeks since it seems to have fully healed. This was perfect timing, by the way, because it meant I didn’t have to worry about it all during the two weeks I was in the boonies with my family.
I’ll often be in the middle of a conversation with someone—a friend or acquaintance, or even a stranger—and the person will break off suddenly to stare in fascination at my bottom lip.
Time for the questions, I think.
“Does it hurt?”
No.
“Did it hurt when they—you know . . .”
Not really. Not even as much as an injection. It was over so quickly it didn’t have time to hurt or bleed.
“Does it have a backing?”
It has a flat head, like a nail or a tack.

“Does it bother you at all?”
Um, not anymore . . . now that the infection is gone.
This is about the time their eyebrows rise in horror and the conversation ends, with the friend/acquaintance/stranger declaring he or she could never get a piercing.
I, on the other hand, like it so much I plan on piercing something else—probably an eyebrow—within the next year.

Oh sweet. I’ve never noticed it in any of your photos. I want my eyebrow pierced too, and my nose. What I want most is a tattoo. Just a beautiful tattoo of elephants on my back. My aunt has this amazing tattoo on her leg. The wolf has great significance in our family, and she had a wolf and a paw print tattooed on her leg. It was a really wicked design too. We’re thinking we should make it a family thing. Hahaha.

More power to you, Tash. That sounds really sweet. I think tattoos are sexy—the right one on the right person, of course, which is pretty much true of everything—but the idea of getting one makes me writhe. I have a low tolerance for pain. But I would totally date a guy with tats.

dont…the eyebrow piercings have quite a chance to come out as in through the flesh…happened to two of the students in my university when they got it …as far as the bottom lip piercing goes it looks good…as much as i would want a piercing i cant bear the pain :(…n also not so crazy abt it…tattoo is sth i am crazy abt but then again the pain issue comes in…and as an art student and an artist in training i am much more into the designs n stuff like that

Yeah, migration is a potential problem for any surface piercing, but I hope to avoid that by a) getting it done by a professional and b) getting a light, low-gauge barbell. Maybe I will regret it, but I love eyebrow piercings and am not dissuaded by the possibility of disfiguring scarring and pain. (Yes, I have a problem.)
I wish I were more artistic. If I were I might be more interested in getting a tattoo.
