Guess What I’m Doing!
I’m sitting in the Sam Weller’s Coffee Garden, reading my new book, listening to music on my newly Genius-enhanced iPhone, drinking a skinny iced vanilla latte and eating a decidedly un-skinny slice of pumpkin pie with whipped cream. And let me tell you: I’m already in love with Cryptonomicon. Neal Stephenson is MARVELOUS.
Later: now I’m on my way to the gym to work off the un-skinny. Laterz!

Are coffee shops vaguely subversive in LDS circles (or Utah)?

Good question. I imagine so, but I just realized that I no long hang out with the kind of person who doesn’t go to coffee shops. I mean, there are Mormons who would never buy anything at Starbucks—even a steamed milk or hot chocolate—in order to avoid “the very appearance of evil.” But I have no patience for that kind of prudery anymore.

I can’t believe how much better the Genius makes playlists than I ever did. I would have never thought to put Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone” with Damien Rice’s “Cannonball.” Truly GENIUS!
And speaking of coffee shops, the first one I ever went to was Cup of Joe on 200 South. Fresh out of BYU, I felt quite subversive, but like I was on Friends, too. It was all so confusing. In fact I wonder if I can blame my spiritual downfall on that delicious, delicious cup of cappuccino I had there that day?

I actually saw you pick the book up from my counter battle station. I was gonna say Hi but the day was hell and you were into your tunes. As for coffee shops I have always found them to be full of a mix of sorta-grownups and rebellious hipsters. At least here in Utah. Mo’s can be found in coffee shops often but they lamely drink cocoa. I personally love coffee shops and my first was Coffee Garden on 9th and 9th. This was when they had the crumbling tiled floor and old school DI furniture. Good times.

My favorite part about Genius is that it is constantly digging up songs I either listened to once and discarded or songs I downloaded/bittorrented/acquired ages ago and never listened to. And these songs then become some of my favorites, all thanks to the genius that is Genius.

I don’t think there is any other reasonable conclusion, Bart. IF ONLY you had listened to the Spirit back then.
Rachel, I didn’t even see you in the store! I was so focused on getting my hands on my Cryptonomicon that I guess I wasn’t paying attention to my surroundings. I almost fell off the ladder while I was getting the book down, I was so entranced. Anyway, I still love your store. The yummy food and drink I had while I was there only cemented my opinion. (Plus you have multiple cute guy coworkers. This never hurts.)

Yum. I want pie, too. Again.
