In Which I Want Fictional Characters to Have Free Access to Information, Too

I’m reading a book right now where a librarian rats the 13-year-old main character out to her dad for being in the library during school hours. Not only that, but the librarian tells the father WHAT THE GIRL WAS GOOGLING (i.e., vampires). Can you say COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL??? Can you say INVASION OF PRIVACY????

I can’t believe I’m so upset about a fictional librarian’s unprofessional actions. But I am.

I love it when I get upset over fictional characters. Not real people I remind myself over and over. Hey Sean, have you read Speak Quietly: Dispatches from a Public Librarian? I thoroughly enjoyed and have pushed it on everyone in my department. Some of the stories in that book seem like fiction, but they’re real.

I’ve put it on hold. I just read the Amazon excerpt and… wow. Must read the rest.

For anyone else who is interested, you can find it here.

Yeah I think they should get a copy for the professional collection.

my agent recently sold a memoir billed as the raucous adventures of a public librarian… who knew, right?

anyway, I love that you’re so angry with the fictional librarian. that’s just fantastic.

I totally get your rage at the fictional situation, but I’m too busy right now being mad at the invasion of privacy of a real person. I just found out that a young friend’s sister randomly saw his orientation status on his blog and immediately outed him to his parents without even talking to him first.

    That’s harsh.

Ugh. That was uncalled for. I hope he’s okay.

He is. He was pretty annoyed at her, because he’s lost the chance to tell them as he would have liked to do, but they at least responded well (technically…they didn’t freak out, but they did say some kind of stupid (though non-mean) things) so he’s choosing to move on. Ironically she of all his family is the most protective of her privacy.
