On the Screen
Patron (wanders up to the desk, reading a magazine) : “Are you on the screen now? because I need to get on the screen too.”
Me: “ ‘On the screen ’ ?”
Patron (making typing motions, and gesturing at my computer monitor): “Are you on the screen now? I don’t want to take you away from what you’re doing.”
Me: “. . . It’s my job to help you. What is it you need?”

OK. I just spent like forty-five minutes guzzling these library moments.
Thank you for posting these gems. I used to be Assistant Head Librarian at a small rural library and these bring back so many memories. Anyone who has not worked in a library can never understand.

It’s true! Working in a library is a unique customer-service experience. Other jobs may be weirder, or worse, or better—but none is anything like it. :D
